B&B Diversified Enterprises, Inc. (B&B) was founded by Carl Bastian in 1996 after working in the petroleum and environmental industries for 15 years. Carl began his professional career as an exploration geophysicist in 1981 for Amoco Production Company in Texas, but returned in 1987 to his native state of Pennsylvania to work in environmental consulting. After rising to top management roles at two different environmental consulting firms in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Carl formed B&B Diversified in 1996 as a consulting firm specializing in environmental investigation, due diligence, remediation and contaminant hydrogeology.
From 1996 through 2006, B&B grew rapidly by coupling expert technical knowledge and experience with a practical, realistic approach to every situation. In 2006, Kathy Bastian, Esq. joined B&B in order to assist with and manage B&B’s growth. Kathy, formerly a partner in a large Philadelphia law firm with nearly two decades of experience practicing contract and transactional law, undertook responsibility for contract negotiation, financial management, operational organization, strategic planning, human resources, and oversight of the firm’s day-to-day operations. In 2006, B&B became a woman-owned business and Kathy assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer and in-house counsel for B&B while Carl remained President. This change allowed Carl to focus more of his time on business development and technical oversight by relinquishing many of his previous responsibilities. Another key to B&B’s success has been the immense contributions of Mark Bedle, B&B’s Vice President of Operations. Mark joined B&B in 1999 and has been an integral part of B&B’s growth over the years. His responsibilities include technical oversight of projects, health and safety, QA/QC, IT, and key client contact for many of the firm’s major clients.
Through our first two decades, B&B has managed multi-site portfolios for several major oil companies (i.e. ExxonMobil, Valero, Getty/Lukoil, etc.), completed several Brownfield closures (e.g. Act 2 in PA), performed hundreds of third-party technical reviews for environmental insurance claims, and conducted Phase I Site Assessments for property transfer on behalf of banks, developers, and private individuals. Our clients represent a diverse number of industries including petroleum, insurance, manufacturing, banking, and law firms. In 2016, B&B was awarded a GSA schedule contract for Federal government work.
B&B’s staff members maintain professional licenses in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Florida, with personnel based in both Pennsylvania and Florida. Our team of professionals has expertise in our core areas of site investigation/characterization, remediation, Brownfield closures, hydrogeologic investigations, underground storage tank closures, and due diligence for property transfer. In addition, we have expanded our expertise with key hires in geographic information systems and database management. Our field technicians have extensive experience in sampling soil, groundwater, surface water, stormwater, indoor air, and soil gas, as well as aquifer pumping tests, remediation pilot tests, remediation system installations, and remediation system operations and maintenance.
